Case study

We run our own business on it

TillJotter wasn't built as a product first and tested on a business later. It was built because Monmu & Monje — a small food and catering business — needed books that were actually correct, and nothing on the market fit. Every month, that business's real bookkeeping runs through the same software you sign up for.

The problem

A food business generates a messy mix: card sales, cash, catering deposits taken weeks before the event, supplier runs to three different stores, and mileage. The big accounting packages assume you already know what "undeposited funds" means. The simple apps give you a tidy chart and nothing your accountant can file from.

The result, for years, was the usual: a shoebox, a stressful April, and no real confidence that the numbers were right.

The monthly routine

Through the month
Transactions arrive on their own

The business bank account is connected, so purchases and deposits flow in without anyone typing them. Familiar vendors are categorized automatically by saved rules; anything new gets an AI suggestion to approve or correct. Receipts get photographed at the counter and matched to the right transaction later.

Once a week
Clear the review queue

Roughly ten minutes. Anything the app wasn't confident about is sitting in one list — assign a category, tick "remember this vendor", and it never asks again. This is the habit that makes month-end painless.

Month end
Reconcile against the statement

Enter the closing balance from the bank statement and tick off what matches. When the difference reaches $0.00, the books provably agree with the bank — which is the whole point, and the thing most businesses never actually do.

Month end
Close the period

The close wizard walks through imports, uncategorized items, reconciliation, inventory, and sales tax, then locks the month so nothing can be edited behind you by accident.

Quarterly
Check the tax estimate

Estimated tax is calculated from actual income and expenses to date, so a quarterly payment is never a guess or a shock.

Year end
Hand the accountant one file

One click builds a package: the Schedule C summary, P&L, balance sheet, the full ledger as CSV, mileage logs, and receipts organized by month. No shoebox, no "can you send me the bank statements again?".

What changed

Bookkeeping time, before
~6 hrs
per month, mostly at year end, mostly panic
Bookkeeping time, now
~45 min
per month, spread over weekly 10-minute passes
Transactions handled
~250
per month across bank feed, cash sales, and receipts
Reconciliation difference
$0.00
every closed month — the number that matters

Figures above are rounded and illustrative of a business of this size — they describe the shape of the change, not audited results.

The part that matters

The reconciliation difference reaching $0.00 every month is the real outcome. It means the books and the bank agree — not approximately, exactly. That's the difference between numbers you hope are right and numbers you can file from.
